Challah [11.22.09]

bakebakebake

[metaphoroflife]
[ mood | chipper ]

Hi BakeBakeBake! This is my first attempt at bread (specifically, challah) and it went quite edibly (always good!). I chose a rather terrible day for it, since it's been about 35˚C here today, making having an oven on slightly challenging. On the other hand, the dough rose well.

The recipe is for honey and vanilla challah; only one of these loaves was actually honey and vanilla. Due to a mix-up involving over-risen dough and a Buffy run, I lost track of their respective identities, but all was solved upon tasting. There was twice as much honey and vanilla in mine as there was in the recipe, but I found the flavour was still quite mild (though enough to help identify the mystery loaf). I also added an extra egg, because eggs are tasty.

I made both these loaves out one batch of dough, so they're half-sized, and one was more than adequate with dinner for the family.

The recipe is from here, and the braiding instructions I followed are here.

Bread! )

Desserts with cinnamon bread? [11.21.09]

bakebakebake

[khasael]
Oh, I hope you all can help...

I made a batch of Cinnamon Bread tonight, from an "Amish Cinnamon Bread" starter (I seriously doubt the Amish have always used instant vanilla pudding mix in their breads). And things...went awry. I made the same recipe 10 days ago, and the middle of the bread fell. I suspect it has something to do with me living at high altitude (a little over a mile up).

This time, however, the pans overflowed. A lot. One minute, it smelled divine, and the next, smoke as the batter (yes, batter, not dough) hit the heating element. I'm not sure if it's a fermentation issue, or if the pans I used this time (my mother's set) are smaller than the ones I used last time, or if it's something else.

I cleaned it up, and tried to salvage the remaining bread. That seems to have worked, as it is cooked through and still tastes lovely. But it looks really ugly. Is there another way to use this? I was hoping to bring it to a gathering this coming week to share, and really don't want to bring it in its current condition. Does anyone have a recipe for a dessert that would use bits of cinnamon bread? If it matters, it's a pretty dense bread, and fairly moist. If not, I will keep both loaves here and my brother and I will snack on them, and I'll just bring the cookies people have been asking for.

Thank you in advance!

Stuff to sell/give away [11.22.09]

cthulhu_dream
It's that time of the year again!

We are moving into an apartment in January and have some stuff to sell and give away. Here is the list:

- Gas BBQ. Small and round, already second hand when I bought it with some rusty bits. Comes with 2 partially filled small gas bottles. Works fine, just won't be able to use it at our new place. Will throw in a BBQ cleaning brush if I can find it. $45

- 3/4 black pants from Glassons. Very good condition, kind of dressy. Size 10, but kind of a large size 10, so closer to 12. $5

- Burgundy PVC skirt, size 10. $5

- Ball skirt, size 10 to 12 (sits on the waist). Good condition, would suit someone a little shorter than me (maybe around 150-155 cm, I am 165 cm). $25

- 2 piece black shiny vinyl dress. Skirt is high waist and tight, and the top is a lace-up bodice type top. Size 8 - 10 and would suit someone around 150 cm tall. For me, the skirt fits around the waist, but is just too short. Purchased new on Trade Me, not worn at all, other than trying it on. $60

- Hellgate London for the PC. $15

Free stuff:

- Approximately 2 years worth of Physics World magazines. Content is in layman's terms, and is good for someone who is interested in what's going on in physics these days. Years are 2005/06 mostly.
- 2 tall green candles (maybe other candles too).
- Foam darts that say they fit those semi-automatic "Air Blaster" dart guns, but are actually too small.
- Plastic lanyard things. Not sure what they are called. Kids plait them somehow and make keychains and stuff. Multicoloured.
- Book on structured cobol
- Patterns for 6 summer tops
- Iron-on hemming (unopened)
- "A New Kind of Science" by Stephen Wolfram
- Shick Intuition razor refill, unopened
- Handbook of Great Composers

Creamy Chicken and Green Chile Enchiladas with Mexican Sausage Rice [11.21.09]

[layers_of_eli]
I've been sick lately, and had to cancel a Thanksgiving potluck tonight to stay home sniffling. I'm not that disappointed, though, because I stumbled upon a Mexican FEAST of comfort food: Creamy Chicken and Green Chile Enchiladas with Mexican Sausage Rice.

The rice was pretty good, but the enchiladas were AMAZING -- and so easy, since they can be made with a store-bought rotisserie chicken. They were creamy, tangy, saucy, and warm. You must try them! Of course my boyfriend and I ate as daintily as the pictured plate suggests (or else we scarfed down four enchiladas each as quickly as possible while watching Star Trek: DS9).

recipe and more photos! )

So I know this isn't really Sofia news, and I KNOW this has probably been bought up before, but I just got through Broken English (loved it) and totally recognized Sofia's apartment. I remembered hearing something about her contribution to the movie but I couldn't remember what and I'd been wanting to see Broken English for a while so I finally picked it up. Too cutes.

Peanut Butter Fudge Cake [11.21.09]

I found this while hunting for recipes that call for buttermilk, in an attempt to use some up before the Sell-By Date of No Return, and it's amaaaazing. If you like the chocolate & peanut butter combo, definitely try it. It tastes like a Reese's cup in cake form! :D It's quite rich, and absolutely perfect with a glass of milk. Sadly there wasn't a chance to take pictures before it was devoured, but the recipe is under the cut.

Recipe from AllRecipes. (There are pictures there, too.)

Chocolatey peanut butter goodness. )

I forgot to sift the confectioners' sugar and add the vanilla to the frosting (baking while watching television = not a great idea haha) but it that didn't seem to affect anything.

Help! Lemons! [11.21.09]

bakebakebake

[i_care_too_much]
Hello all!

I decided today to make a small batch of home made Limoncello, and bought 6 lemons. They've been entirely zested and the peel is steeping in Vodka for the next ten days. (Excited!)

But, I didn't think about the fact that now I have 6 lemons, sans peel, and I know they won't keep more than a day or two without drying out in the fridge. I don't want to waste them, and was wondering if you guys had any neat ideas for them. I was thinking lemon bars or something similar, but all the recipes i can find ask for zest, which I don't have any more of.. :)

I don't want to cop out and just make a batch of lemonade, so any ideas would be amazing!!

Also, for what it's worth, I have pretty much all important baking elements in the pantry and fridge, soo suggest just about anything!

Thanks so much!!!

What is it with cats and snack packages? Anyway, there's lots of cool stuff in here. I had no idea what to ask for, but i'm super excited to see all the mountains and the idaho spud. I've seen those in other people's swaps and wanted to try them! Also, huckleberry tea, that should be fun when winter hits hard. We get Theo bars in nyc too, but i've never seen the 'fennel, fig, and almond' flavor- i can't wait to try it! So much chocolate, I bet these snacks don't stick around long! I've already eaten the peanut butter mountain and Hawaian Kona caramels. I'm trying really hard not to open up the double chocolate stout cookies. I just have to find a place to hide them from my room mate. :) Oh, also, single serving spam? I had no idea there was such a thing! lol
[info]danicia put together an awesome package. Yours should be arriving soon!

A French Christmas? [11.21.09]

bakebakebake

[operative47]
[ mood | hopeful ]

Hello all! I've been searching the interweb and have browsed through this community, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for! I'm hoping someone can help!!

My family and I are having our 2nd annual Christmas Bake Fest and this year I'd like to French-theme my two desserts. But that's where my problem lays; the only French Christmas dessert I can seem to find is a yule log. As delightfully festive as that would be, it almost seems pointless when it's divided among 5 people.

So if anyone has got any French/French-Canadian recipes they'd be willing to share, I would be extremely grateful!! :)

The Tegan and Sara Dish [11.20.09]

[ariotstays21]
Hey everyone! I'm pretty new here and decided I'd give this a shot! I'm an avid Tegan and Sara fan and a couple years ago while promoting their cd The Con they were featured on MTV's Artist of the Week. They did a segment called "Cooking with Tegan and Sara" and while they never mentioned what the name of the dish was called, it looked good! I recently watched the video a few times and decided to give it a go!

Recipe, pics, and vid under the cut! )

Help with Thanksgiving Desserts [11.20.09]

bakebakebake

[ala_too]
I'm baking dessert for a Thanksgiving celebration. My host is allergic to wheat so I want to make something which is a Thanksgiving-style dish and which they can eat. They serve everything as a buffet so it needs to be something which can stand up to a couple of hours out on the table. I made a pumpkin nut torte last year which was a hit. Any ideas for this year?

I've overslept like woah this morning.

And now I'm on hlj looking at dolly things - mainly for dolly dolly 16 which has instructions on how to make pose dolls. Though I also have my eye on a Licca dresser, some beading craft books and a whole plethora of toys.

I think I'll make some soup from the butternut squash I bought without really thinking what I was going to do with it and then finish tidying the apartment. A day of wholesome domestic activity awaits me.

Gosh. I'm an adult now.

My rubidiums and potassiums, let me show you them [11.21.09]

cthulhu_dream
This here is a photo of atoms confined in a magneto-optical trap (MOT)! The shiny red blob in the middle is made up of rubidium-87 and potassium-40 atoms. The atoms are in a vacuum chamber with laser light bombarding them from 6 sides and a magnetic field keeps them in one place. They are fluorescing in the near-infrared and therefore visible to the naked eye. In real life they look much dimmer, but the photo was taken with a 30 second exposure time.

The diameter of the cloud is around half a centimeter and the temperature of the atoms is on the order of 1 mK. For comparison, the temperature of space is around 2.7 K and the temperature of a Bose-Einstein condensate or BEC (what we are aiming for) is less than 100 nK. 1 K (kelvin) = 1 degree C, but the scale is shifted so 0 K = -273 C. 0 K is known as absolute zero. A MOT is the first stage of cooling leading to BEC.

The photo was taken by another PhD student working on the experiment.

Raspberry tart [11.20.09]

Hi guys,
I would really appreciate it if one of you had a simple, easy-as-possible recipe for raspberry tart (it's my first). I know, a tart. It's not exactly a no-frills food. But I want to make a tart without raspberry liqueor or some other hard to find ingredient, or nuts.
A tart that's lemon or blueberry or some other fruit that's in supermarkets is fine.
Thank you!

Practical Guide to Patternmaking for Fashion Designers [11.20.09]

Has anyone here used this book before?

I am interested to know if they have found the drafts that come from it to be a good fit or not? And also if they have used the author's measurement tables to create garments in standard sizes.

I am looking for a book to recommend. I know everyone always says Patternmaking by the Flat Pattern Method but I like to offer options to people.

I've xposted this to a few communities, apologies if it shows up more than once on your friend's list.

Hello, all!

I have been searching for a good royal icing recipe to decorate sugar cookies with. A lot of the ones I've tried, aren't very tasty at all. Something using meringue powder instead of egg whites preferably. Any help would be appreciated!
